On a dull blustery wet and windy August day Dave Hughes & Jon Turner were the rays of sunshine as Higham claimed a nail biting 8 run victory over Teston. Losing the toss and being invited to bat, Richard Shackleton and Colin Robson found life very tough with the ball zipping around off the wet pitch. The duo battled and braved the conditions and put on 32 runs until Robson nibbled at an out swinger, which was juggled and eventually taken by the keeper. As Robson trudged off the rain became heavier. Hughes struggled at first and gave early chances that Teston failed to take. The weather was making life hard for bowlers and batsmen alike, and as their minds may have strayed to being in the dry pavilion, Shackleton was adjudged lbw to D.Norton. Teston hopes of reducing Higham further where dashed as the weather deteriorated further and the umpires called a halt to proceedings. An early tea was taken, and surprisingly the rain cleared and the game resumed with the match being reduced to 30 overs per side. With 15 overs remaining there was little time for David Hughes and Steve Hall to play themselves in; the partnership began steadily with Hughes taking the lead and unleashing some hefty blows to keep Higham's momentum going. As the partnership neared 50, Teston removed the turgid Hall who fell looking for quick runs. Adam Hall followed his father soon afterwards, leaving Higham 104-4. As Higham neared the end of there innings, Hughes brought up his 50, then demolished the Teston bowling including 3 sixes out of the ground which had the local shire horses scurrying for cover. Allan Twichett and Jon Turner both fell late on, but Hughes ended 77 not out and gave Higham a solid score of 144-6. Higham where relying on a makeshift opening bowling attack with Jon Turner teaming up with Craig Cooper, who after 11 years of playing was opening bowler for the first time. Higham started well and with solid field settings Teston found boundaries hard to come by, the pressure soon tolled as Slingsby's misplaced drive off Turner found Hughes in the covers. Webley was bowled by Cooper soon after, and Teston where left 23-2. Wilson began positively and hit some lusty blows to lift the gloom for Teston, Erlam looked to follow Wilson's lead but Turner held a sharp return catch. Wilson continued his onslaught and found a worthy ally in Lumb and began taking the game away from Higham. Turner then struck the big wicket. Wilson looking to hit a maximum only managed to find the safe hands of Hughes at deep mid wicket. Turner then completed his first five-wicket hall for the club as he removed Lumb lbw and had D.Norton caught low by Twitchett at mid off leaving Teston reeling at 96-6. Turner celebrated further when Osbourne was bowled advancing down the wicket. P.Norton put Teston on the verge of victory as he rattled up a quick fire innings before being deceived by man of the moment, Jon Turners slower ball. As the pressure mounted Hughes removed S.Norton and the final curtain fell when Rooms was caught on the deep square leg boundary by you've guessed it Jon Turner. Higham completed a remarkable victory but credit must also go to two youngsters Adam Hall (13) and Harry Jeal (11) who both fielded magnificently and are ones to watch out for in the future. |
