As you can guess the Bank Holiday Weekend started in normal fashion. Grey, wet and more like October. The game started under very large dark clouds, with Higham bowling on a damp slow wicket. After only 6 overs, and Borden set well on 28-0 the heavens opened and both teams ran for cover as light rain gave way to a deluge. The Captains decided to take an early tea and give as much time as possible for the rain to ease and ground dry. Eventually just before 4pm, the rain had cleared and played resumed for a 25-over a side match with a very wet and squishy pitch and outfield. Borden's Sanders and Harwood hoped to carry on their opening partnership, but Harwood was first back to the pavilion as Walsh found the edge which Steve Hall pouched in the gully. Sutton came and went when he took a single to the prowling tiger Mark Cunningham and was run out comfortably. Borden where now 32-2 and facing a bubbling Higham looking for further in roads. Lucas and Sanders dug in well and kept the scoreboard ticking over. Captain Keith Short rotated his bowlers and old-stager Nigel Amos struck as Borden where looking to score quick runs, as Lucas played around a full straight delivery. The quest for quick runs proved too much for Borden as they collapsed from 62 –2 to 80-5 with Amos also bowling the dangerous Noakes, and Craig Cooper taking 2 quick wickets including the prize scalp of Sanders. Knight, who survived a close run out when on 0, lifted the Borden total past 100 with some big hitting before he fell looking for an expansive drive off Mark Cunningham. Mark Cunningham also snared Bingham and Borden finished on 114–8 off their allotted 25 overs. Experienced Duo Nick Shackleton and Duncan Spencer where sent out to start Higham's chase for 114. Borden had high hopes on a pitch, which was damp and hard to score runs on. Knight and Bimson opened tightly and kept the opening duo under wraps but where unable to make an early breakthrough. Even worse for Borden the sun came out providing a warming summer breeze, which helped dry the outfield and pitch making life easier for the Beggars batsmen. As the opening bowlers where replaced Nick began to break the shackles and unleashed a number of trademark booming cover drives and meaty pull shots which brought up yet another 50 for the club. Spin was tried, but both openers leaped onto it and continued the assault with Duncan Spencer also finding the boundary with a number of sumptuous shot off the back foot and to bring up a dominant 100 Partnership. With the sun light fading and the heads of the Borden players lowering, Duncan Spencer was called through for a quick single but failed to make his ground. An opening Partnership of a 108 had setup Higham on the road to victory. Steve Hall joined Nick Shackelton and finished the job with no further trouble. Higham had claimed a comprehensive victory by 9 wickets and 4 overs to spare. |
