Higham welcomed the final month of the cricketing season and journeyed to Detling with high hopes of continuing their recent winning streak. As in the past few Saturday fixtures the day was again wet, grey and very windy. Surprisingly Higham lost the tossed and where invited to bowl in what seemed very bowler friendly conditions. Higham's early hopes lied with Barry Feist and John Turner and both had to adjust to the slope that the Detling pitch was set on. Higham made instant progress as Barry Feist produced a jaffer that moved up the slope and rattled Batchelor’s stumps. Higham where unfortunate to make further inroads as accurate bowling from Feist and Turner had both batsmen edging and finding the gaps. Eventually the luck changed as Barry Feist moved another delivery up the hill and Thomas could only edge behind. There was no reprieve for Detling as John Turner got a well deserved wicket when Onions nicked an out swinger to Short at second slip. Richard Hawkins replaced Barry Feist and after only a handful of delivery's Savage was bowled looking for an exuberant shot on the leg side. Detling had been rocked and had lost 4 wickets for 12 runs and Higham's minds may have began thinking of further wickets and a quick finish to the game. Opener Ian Thomas together with Mark Baldwin had other ideas as they set about rebuilding the innings. Straight from the start Baldwin looked to assert himself and dispatched Hawkins onto the leg side with distain. Nigel Amos was brought on to replace John Turner and kept it tight but was unable to make the breakthrough. Both batsmen had slices of good fortune but they continued on their merry way with Thomas opening his shoulders and joining Baldwin in the boundary hunt. The ball was pinging to the boundary on regular occasions and Higham could not quell the flow of runs and eventually both batsmen made it to their half century. After a partnership of 112 and looking for quick runs Thomas lofted Mark Cunningham high into the air and John Turner held a good catch running backwards at mid-off. Baldwin soon followed after pulling Mark Cunningham for 6 into the adjacent field hit the next delivery down to John Turner at mid-off who held another sharp catch. Detling's Innings finally closed on 168-6 and left Higham a gettable but challenging total. Captain Keith Short opted for the experienced duo of Colin Robson and Nick Shalcketon who so far this season had shared a good number of partnerships. The Higham innings started off positively and the opening bowlers barely troubled either batsmen with Nick Shackleton being as dominant as ever and hitting the boundary ropes on regular occasions. Higham where looking comfortable and where well placed at 46-0 when Nick Shackleton top edged a delivery from Baldwin and young Weighman took an excellent catch on the deep square leg boundary to remove the dangerman. This inspired the opening bowlers Baldwin and Thomas and they snared 3 further quick wickets to reduce Higham to 67-4. Mark Cunningham offered some hope and combined with young Adam Hall to push the scoring on. Woodard came into the attack and made the vital breakthrough having Mark Cunningham caught at square leg, he followed up with a further 2 quick wickets and Higham where reeling at 93-7. Higham where given a glimmer of hope of victory as John Turner and Barry Feist combined and produced a combination of attack and defence and pushed the scoreboard onwards for Higham with Feist cutting and driving imperiously. As the game was in the balance Woodard struck as John Turner perished in the quest for quick runs cutting to Onions in the slips. Higham where still 36 Runs short of victory with 2 wickets in hand and overs running out, the onus was on Barry Feist. Nigel Amos helped ease some of the pressure as with gay abandonment he crashed Town over square leg for a well needed boundary. Barry Feist then upped the anti as he crashed a 4 and 6 in consecutive delivery's. Next ball Woodard got his revenge and the key wicket as Feist came down the track looking for another big hit but was beaten by the flight and stumped well by Archer. Richard Hawkins and Nigel Amos continued to look for a Higham victory but Nigel Amos unleashed an attempted big shot and was caught at mid-wicket. A Jubilant Detling celebrated and Higahm started off September in uncommon defeat. |
