Dishevelled Higham Suffer Further Sunday Blues

  Steve Bell : Early Breakthrough
Steve Bell : Early Breakthrough

Higham welcomed a home fixture and for a change where greeted by a sunny but breezy day. Hoping the change in weather would also favour a change back to victorious ways and give some well needed confidence for their final league game on the following Sunday, David Hughes and his merry men strode out onto the field in confident and buoyant fashion.

Higham's positive mood encouraged new ball bowlers Steve Bell and Robert Harton who began accurately and tightly, and the pressure soon paid dividends as Steve Bell bowled opener Fazal and had Haider caught in the covers by a superb salmon like one handed catch by Richard Shackleton both for 0 within the first over.

Yalding's reply was attack and both batsmen’s aggressive play help move the scoreboard on but also gave numerous chances that agonisingly kept finding the gaps. As Higham became frustrated Khurshid and Zulifqar indulged themselves and became well acquainted with the boundary line eventually bringing up a 100 run partnership.

Leigh Short came back into the attack and Zulifqar went for one big shot to many and was caught on the boundary just 3 runs short of a half century. Khurshid after reaching his 50 soon followed as he was undone by straight full delivery from Leigh Short and was adjudged lbw.

The Beggars lifted by 2 quick wickets made further breakthroughs and fought back well to have Yalding 163-7. However, any hopes of wrapping up the innings where soon blown away as Rafiq and S Haider combined to dominate the last few overs with an 80 run partnership that consisted of some brutal batting from Haider who raced to a quick fire fifty which included four sixes off a despairing Mark Cunningham.

Haider finally fell to Mark Cunningham, but the damage had been done as Yalding closed on 256-8. A beleaguered and demoralised Higham strode off the field and where left contemplating the run chase.

Higham opted for a rare opening partnership of two left-handers in the two Richard's, Pannell and Shackleton.

Yalding opened up and made life tough for the batsmen with hostile and accurate bowling. Eventually after a sturdy opening partnership of 36 runs left armer R Haider removed Pannell's off stump.

Higham's hopes where further dented as Richard Shackleton nibbled a catch behind off Haider and David Hughes attempted cut off U Pervaiz looped high to the covers leaving the Beggars teetering on 48-3.

Higham showed some fighting spirit and Mark Cunningham and Leigh Short teamed up to keep Higham's hopes alive with fluent stroke play and clever running showing there where sill runs to be had. As the opening duo of S Haider and U Pervaiz where replaced both batsmen lost there concentration as Leigh Short was bowled and Mark Cunningham chipped to the covers leaving Higham reeling at 86-5.

This soon that became 97-6 when Duncan Spencer lobbed a simple catch to midwicket. Craig Cooper offered some resistance, but was bowled attempting a leg side hit.

Steve Bell came to the crease and was unluckily caught after middling one straight to Ghouse at square leg.

Higham's hopes where all but over Wesley Williams after being dropped early in his innings lifted the mood and spirit in the camp as he creamed the bowlers with distain to all parts of the ground including a tasty straight six and moved swiftly to 25 before Fazal rattled his timbers.

Richard Hawkins and Robert Harton played freely and put on 22 before Richard Hawkins was run out to bring the curtain down on Higham's innings for a disappointing score of only 150
